“The Times” – Top 50 Employers for Women

“The Times” – Top 50 Employers for Women was free for any employer with a UK presence to enter and involved a comprehensive submission process, which was managed by Opportunity.  They recently published the 2015 edition of its Top 50 Employers for Women list, celebrating the organisations that lead in workplace gender equality.  Now a gender equality campaign run by Business in the Community, all organisations within the Top 50 demonstrated that gender equality is a key part of their business strategy, with consistent commitment to progressing women in the workplace that covers their entire organisation, not just isolated areas.

Law firms traditionally have a macho image but big strides have been made in recent years to expand opportunities for women — which explains why among the top fifty UK employers are 9 law firms: (in alphabetical order) Eversheds, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Herbert Smith Freehills, Hogan Lovells, Linklaters, Norton Rose Fulbright, Obelisk Support, Olswang and Simmons & Simmons.

Law Society Chief Executive Catherine Dixon said: ‘It is excellent that a record number of law firms make it on The Times’ top 50 list of best employers for women. All organisations within the Top 50 have demonstrated that gender equality is a key part of their business strategy, with consistent commitment to progressing women in the workplace that covers their entire organisation, not just isolated areas.’

Olswang CEO Michael Burdon said “We are delighted to be listed by The Times as a top 50 employer for women for the second year running.” Olswang understands the importance of having the best talent and ensuring that everyone gets the opportunity to fulfil their potential.  We also know that good intentions are not enough to achieve genuine equality and we have been working hard to ensure that our culture is truly inclusive. We have promoted five phenomenal female lawyers to the partnership this year, which I hope is a sure sign that we are making progress.”

Linklaters Chairman and Senior Partner, Robert Elliott said:  “To be included among Britain’s top employers for women is a great acknowledgement and reflection of our continuing efforts to develop a more diverse and inclusive workforce. The success of any people business rests in attracting, retaining and developing the very best talent which is why gender diversity is one of Linklaters’ global priorities, responding to what our people, our clients and society in general expect.”

Norton Rose Fulbright conducts a number of initiatives aimed at encouraging a diverse and inclusive workforce and in 2012 launched its Global Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council (GDIAC). Sally Macindoe, global head of diversity and inclusion and chair of GDIAC, commented: “Attracting, retaining and promoting female talent is critical to our business success and to delivering the best legal services to our clients.”

It wasn’t so long ago that female lawyers were in the minority. Sexist attitudes weren’t always ‘hidden’ as demonstrated by the author of this letter sent in to the Law Gazette and appeared in the Obiter section on the 7th November 1984:

Lady lawyers really are on the rampage. What alarms me is the prospect of so many determined young women leaving their families to be run by others while they catch the train to the office. No wonder there are so many broken homes. Though I write to you, madam, it is to the beginner that my questions are really addressed – to the exquisite professional with the new briefcase in her first job. What sort of wife and mother will she turn out to be, and what does the home help’s home help do with her children?
