Social Mobility a Key Concern for Law Firms

With regards to social mobility, the law industry seems to be leading the way, with 14 firms firmly in the top 50 list of practices who have strived to take the greatest action to ensure they hire from all backgrounds.

The Ministry of Justice is at the top of the legal sector, with a third placing in the top 50 ranking. The rank is currently being run by the Social Mobility Foundation, the City of London Corporation and the Social Mobility Commission. Whilst the rank is only in its second year, it provides a great insight into the efforts that practices are undertaking to improve their own social mobility statuses.

The law firm ranked the highest on the list is Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner in fourth place. Other firms including Clifford Change, Hogan Lovells and Pinsent Masons are also on the list.

The list is compiled based on the results of a free survey, which investigates the selection processes of firms, along with their work with young people, and their keenness to employ those from a lower income.  More than 100 practices submitted responses to the survey this year.

One thing for sure is that more practices than ever before are beginning to think carefully about the issue of social mobility. This is largely because of the number of benefits this kind of diversity can bring with it.

As an example of the types of programmes being run, there is a firm who are very much leading the way, who run a targeted group aimed at school leavers, with the intention of encouraging social mobility in this way.  This includes a youth work experience programme, for those who wouldn’t otherwise have had the chance to even consider a career in the legal profession.

It is thought that a diverse range of employees could be a key factor when it comes to success in any law firm, and as a result of this it seems likely that even more firms will make the effort to come into line with those topping the list in the near future.

And whilst this has focussed on larger firms, it is also the case that these are considerations throughout the whole of the legal sector.  Therefore smaller practices are focusing on this area with as much enthusiasm.
